Mr. Moustache is in need of a loving foster home for his last days

Mr Moustache is a PFA rescue cat, a handsome tame guy who was rescued after depending on one of our feeding stations in North Central for his food and shelter all summer. He spent some time in my basement room being assessed between his neuter at the vet and going to his foster home. He is AWESOME. He was likely on the street for some time, and he relishes being warm, snuggling on laps, and eating as much as he wants. Now, we have discovered that he has Feline Leukemia. While he is currently comfortable and content, the reality is that our sweet Mr M likely only has 5 to 6 months left, at the most. We would love to see him enjoy this time and pass on his own terms, rather than be euthanized now. But he needs a loving foster home with no other cats so that can happen. More volunteers needed!

It feels like the time of year when we are always looking for volunteers to help us, and today is no different ;)
People for Animals is volunteering at the Pet Photos with Santa event at Petsmart. We make $5 for every photo taken. which would help make a considerable dent in our vet bills. We had our first day yesterday, and we were run ragged because we didn't have enough volunteers. And, we had to give today to another charity due to a lack of volunteers. Can you help?
The dates are Sat and Sun Dec 11, 12, 18, 19 from 11am to 4pm. We need to have at least 3 people each day to be able to make this fundraising effort work.

Volunteers needed!

Do you want to help homeless animals right here in Regina? Through no fault of their own, many abandoned and stray cats and kittens suffer daily. They need your help to survive. We are a non-profit, charitable, volunteer run pet rescue organization that has rescued hundreds of homeless street cats and kittens from bad situations. We provide food, veterinary care and shelter. All cats are sterilized in an effort to lower the number of street cats, now at crisis proportions.
We are looking for cat loving people who can commit to volunteering one to two hours once a week to help feed the outside feral (wild) cats residing in our established colonies.

Can you help us? Our existing volunteer team members are being run ragged, trying to ensure that none of our wild feline charges suffer because we are low on help.

Volunteers need to have their own transportation, be able to supply cat food, and be willing to go out to feed even in inclement weather. Some of our volunteers do this valuable work with a friend to share the load, and really enjoy this weekly time together!

PFA and a new partnership

Now that People for Animals has charitable status with Revenue Canada, we are able to maximize many of our community efforts. One of these opportunities is to place some adoptable cats in the Adoption Center of the PetSmart store in the east end of Regina. I was in the store last night and got a detailed tour of the facilities, along with the chance to discuss the process at length with the management. I am truly excited about this partnership as PetSmart shares much of the same ideology as PFA when it comes to the importance of sterilization, and pet rescue.

We hope to complete the application process in the next few weeks, and to begin placing cats in the adoption center by Sept. PetSmart has a great track record of adoptions, and I think it will really help find homes for more cats.

Part of this arrangement is that we will provide volunteers to work in the adoption center. The duties will be to clean the cages, clean litter boxes, socialize the cats, and deal with the public if they want to visit with any of the cats. Shifts will be two hours long. I will be setting up a set schedule of shifts that need to be filled - we will be working around the already established shifts that the Humane Society is already filling.

I am posting this note to gather names of people who might be interested in working in the adoption center occasionally. Also, we will be looking for a volunteer adoption center coordinator to take things over from me once things are up and running (to recruit volunteers to fill shifts, liason with PetSmart, and work with me to place cats in spaces there). I know that many of you already do lots for PFA - please don't feel pressured to participate. I just wanted to make sure that I reached anyone who might be interested.

These three lovely ten week old kittens need a foster home! They have had their first shots, and have also been dewormed. We rescued this trio from one of our feeding stations and few weeks ago. Sweet boys who deserve a chance

Tonight, we rescued 7 more cats. Yesterday, we took in two litters of kittens, one 8 weeks old, one 2 weeks old, straight from the streets. These were all absolute emergency cases that we simply could not turned our backs on, despite the fact that we are now wayyyyy over our capacity. We are close to the 100 mark for cats in care now.

I have included photos of 4 of the lovely male cats that we have at Victoria Vet tonight. They are all being neutered tomorrow. Boo is a longhaired grey guy who is so matted that he will be partially shaved tomorrow. Niki is a sweet black and white guy with a huge head and beautiful eyes. KissKiss is an orange and white male tabby, also massive and very verbal. He is with his buddy, Coco, a longhaired black male (not pictured). Finally, there is Bobby, a grizzled old tabby tomcat who deserves every happiness.

We don't have any foster home space for these guys. They need safe spaces where they can learn to trust people again. Can you help?

Our network is currently maxed. We have 87 cats and kittens under our care (a PFA record)!
In addition, we have 16 cats on our "waiting list" but no space in our foster home network or in our emergency boarding facilities.
Adoptions have slowed dramatically since the middle of June.

Poor Missy

Missy is a sweet and gentle 2 year old female cat. And she needs a new foster home by Friday. Can anyone help? We have put a temporary hold on taking in all but the most urgent cases, and even so we are completely full. Any available foster home space has been going to the sick and needy kittens that are so prevalent at this time of year. But Missy needs a spot too.

Another special Sammy

Meet Sammy. He was found last week sheltering in the backyard of one of our regular volunteers in the heart of North Central Regina. Sammy was so sick and malnourished that he could no longer walk. He was just skin and bones, and was only using three of his legs. We rushed him to the vet clinic, where they quickly stabilized him. Sammy is now recovering from a wound on his leg, and from a bad case of upper respiratory infection, common in rescued cats. He is still too weak to be neutered, but once he is well enough, we will take that step.

Sammy was clearly on his own for some time, judging by how frozen his ears were. He has lost a lot of his ears from frostbite. Our vet says that his teeth suggest he is about a year old, but his physical condition was so poor that he seemed much older. We are hopeful that we can rehabilitate Sammy so that he can once again enjoy being a healthy, young cat.

Even with his poor physical condition, Sammy has been a very loving and sweet boy. We love him!!!

PFA Foster home situation - URGENT

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY, WE ARE FREEZING INTAKE OF RESCUED CATS INTO THE FOSTERING PROGRAM.
We are completely over capacity. We have 74 cats and kittens in care.

We have two barometers of how overcapacity we are, and both are ringing alarm bells. The first is my house, where I currently have 7 adult foster cats and five kittens (in addition to my own 6 cats and 2 dogs). The second are the boarding facilities we use in emergencies, where we currently have 5 more cats. So, even when we have openings, we will be playing catch up as we try to move the cats out of these temporary situations.

Cat adoptions are at a virtual standstill. The only adoptions that are happening right now are kittens. We are doing our best, but it is kitten season.

Tootsie and her babies

Some of our long time readers will recall Baby Girl and her family, who were rescued by PFA in Oct 2008. We found homes for three of the kittens, and I am still fostering Baby Girl and Emma, who are doing wonderfully.

Today, I got a phone call from Elizabeth, the woman who had rescued BG and her kittens. As sick as she continues to be with her cancer, Elizabeth is still rescuing cats in her area. She weighs only 88 pounds now, and there isn't a lot that the doctors can do for her, but this spirited lady still fiercely defends and shelters all of the strays that come to her yard.

Elizabeth was hoping that PFA could help with a momma cat, Tootsie, and her five 4 week old kittens. This family had been living in her yard, but she knew that they needed more: the safety of a foster home, good homes for the kittens, and sterilization for Tootsie.

I know that when Elizabeth calls me, it means that she really needs help. So Alanna and I headed over this afternoon, and with Elizabeth's help we rounded up the whole family.

As usual, we are short of foster home spots. So, for now, Tootsie and her babies are in my bathroom. She is alarmed by this sudden change of circumstances, so she's got all of her kids in my bathroom cabinet. I am hopeful that she'll relax in the next day or so and realize that they are safe.

I already have such a full house: right now I am also fostering Baby Girl and Emma, Honey, Blue, Pacer, Chika and her two babies, and now I have this little family too.

Can you help? The kittens will be ready to be adopted in three or four weeks, and at that point we will be able to have Tootsie spayed and list her for adoption as well.

Farm homes needed for Feral Cats

A colony of thirteen cats residing in Glencairn recently came to the attention of People for Animals.

These are cats who have been abandoned or lost, and have banded together in an area where residents have been feeding them. People for Animals is determined to prevent further reproduction among this colony, so the cats are being trapped and sterilized beginning today (May 5).

We urgently need good farm homes to take some of these cats who will no doubt turn out to be feral. The cats will all have been sterilized and treated by vets. A Plea for Help

People for Animals has been busy these past few weeks, working to trap and sterilize the many cats that we feed and shelter on our feral cat routes in the inner city. We have already succeeded in trapping 25 cats, but we know that there are so many more left to do, and we fear the repercussions of the many unwanted pregnancies that will result without intervention. Because one female cat can have as many as four litters per year, a single sterilization can prevent an average of twenty unwanted kittens.

We are committed to this trap/neuter/release process to decrease the excess population of stray cats in Regina. It works! However, each sterilization that we undertake costs money, and our current efforts have been so successful that we have already exhausted the funds that we had set aside for this spring effort. Without added funds, we will be forced to stop this spring trapping and sterilization blitz, which will result in many kittens being born on the street. We know that there are still at least 20 to 30 more cats that we could easily trap and sterilize with enough funds.

Can you help us? The average neuter costs $100, and the average spay costs $130. Contributions of every size will help make a difference, and decrease the feline suffering, homelessness and unwanted reproduction that is happening in our city.

Another momma cat and kittens in need

Some of our long time readers and volunteers will remember the first case of dumpster kittens, last fall. Since then, we had developed our suspicions about where the kittens had come from, and who had dumped them, until we were relatively certain that we knew who and where it was. However, with no concrete proof, there was no way we could make a report to animal protection. With kitten season upon us, several of us in pet rescue couldn't bear to think that this same home likely still had an intact female cat who would be having more kittens who might suffer the same fate.

Today, Pat, our intrepid President and head of Pet Rescue, took things into her capable hands and dropped by the home in question. She came right out and asked if they had any kittens, and did they want help with them. She left with the momma cat (who they called "useless") and five kittens, about 5 weeks old. There is no question, looking at her and these babies, that she is also the momma of the sweet kittens that Carol rescued last October.

Everyone seems to be in relatively good health. We have named the momma "Lola". She is an incredibly attentive mother to her babies. Once they are old enough to be weaned and adopted out she will be spayed, and listed for adoption. Never again will she be called "useless" and forced to bear litter after litter of unwanted kittens.

And, once again, I have kittens and a momma cat in my bathroom who need a foster home. I have three fosters of my own, on top of my 6 cats and my dog. And my mother arrives for a visit on Thursday! An open letter to our friends and supporters in Regina

Hello friends;

PFA is about to embark on our biggest trapping and sterilization effort ever on the streets of North Central Regina. We have plans to send trapping teams out to all 17 of our regular feeding stations, beginning this weekend. It is crucial that we reach street cats before it is too late, and they reproduce. Already, many of the females that we see are pregnant.

While many of the cats that we are targeting are feral, and will be released back to their habitat where we support them with food, water and shelter, it is a guarantee that we will also be trapping tame cats.These tame cats were once loved and socialized, but through no fault of their own they are surviving on the mean streets. While releasing feral cats back outside is the best solution for them, it is not the best solution for a tame cat.

Right now, we have 75 cats and kittens in foster care, and no openings. This means that if the feral team does trap a tame cat and we have it sterilized, it will have nowhere to go to be further rehabilitated and adopted out to a forever home where it will never again know hunger and cold. Can you help?

Even if you have never fostered a cat before, and might never again in the future, you could make a significant difference to our efforts this spring. All you would need would be a spare room with some soft blankets, food and water, litter, and some time to spend with a very grateful rescued street cat. One small spare room is a far better place for them than the streets, or a kennel at the shelter.

PFA will handle all of the medical considerations, the advertising, and the screening for adoptions. We can also supply food and litter if needed.
