Often, greeting a new cat is not as simple as walking up, bending down and lovingly stroking his fur. In fact, this can be the exact way to scare them off (or get yourself scratched!)

Cats are very dependent on their sense of smell to tell if someone is friendly or not, and they need time to sniff you out before readily accepting your petting!
