The Marvelous Mr. Moustache

This handsome fellow is Mr Moustache, a young stray who has been living at a PFA volunteer's outdoor shelter and feeding station in the heart of North Central for the last couple of months.

Mr. Moustache was wary to begin with, but very eager to make friends once he realized he was safe. He is a lovely, sweet cat. We had him neutered last week but had to return him to the feeding station as we didn't have a foster home for him. With the cold weather arriving so suddenly, we realized we had to somehow find a way to bring him into a warm place.

Sarah kindly agreed to house him for a few days so we can get him vaccinated, and this week-end he will be off to PetSmart where we hope he will find a caring forever home quickly!

Swizzle at Home!

Here is an update on our adorable rescued kitten, Swizzle.

Snatched from the hands of young bullies a few weeks ago, she was so terrified and stressed that she developed a condition called twisted bowel.

Swizzle's diarrhea was so severe that she had to be hospitalized at a vet clinic and placed on IV fluids. Thankfully, she made a quick recovery after a couple of scary days and she is now doing very well.

Even better, a staff member at the vet clinic fell in love with her and adopted her on the spot!

PFA is going high class with its recent tuxedo rescues - Toby (below, left), Judy (below) and Pockets (above left).

All are very sweet and friendly cats, fixed and vaccinated and waiting for a forever home that will honour their appreciation of the fine things of life. It's not complicated - when it comes to cats, the fine things amounts to tuna and catnip!

Rest in Peace, Missy and Maeve

Thursday, October 21st was a sad day for PFA volunteers as we lost 2 sweet young female cats in very different circumstances.

Missy was a young female tabby rescued off the street, pregnant and close to giving birth. Soon after her rescue she gave birth to 7 kittens who are currently thriving in foster care. Missy was going to be spayed and then listed for adoption so she could find a forever home of her own, but unfortunately did not survive the surgery. She most likely had a bad reaction to the anesthetic - some cat are very sensitive to it.

Maeve was a young calico found huddled up in severe pain in a shelter at one of the feeding stations in North Central. The volunteers that found her didn't know what was wrong but they knew she was suffering and rushed her to a nearby vet clinic. It turned out that she had an extremely severe infection in her mouth that had turned gangrenous. She was extremely dehydrated, unable to eat and in pain. She was quickly euthanized to end her suffering.

We are happy that Missy was rescued and enjoyed good care and love from a kind foster home before her untimely passing.

Poor Maeve was a recent resident of the feeding station. She had a tattoo so we thought she might have had an owner but appeared to be relying on the PFA feeders for food. Unfortunately her tattoo was not able to be read at the clinic, so her origins and her owner, remain a mystery. We are just happy that she was relieved of her suffering and not alone at the end.

Beautiful Babies!

This adorable little guy is Logan, PFA's youngest volunteer and cat lover. He's been out helping his mom, Sarah, with recent foster home visits.

As you can see, Logan is a hit with little Garfield and the other kittens at the foster home (and vice versa)! His beautiful baby blue eyes are a perfect match to Garfield the kittens.

Out in the Cold!

These two beautiful and unique tabby boys are Romeo and Hamlet. They are friendly and affectionate cats that suddenly found themselves homeless when their owners recently moved away and left them behind.

They are currently sheltering under the porch of the house they used to live in and a kind neighbour is feeding them. But, we are anxious to find either a foster home or a permanent home for these snuggly, belly-rub loving boys before the snow flies.
Please contact us at saskpeopleforanimals@gmail.com if you are interested in helping out Romeo and Hamlet.

Kittens Now Off The Street!

Last week PFA pleaded for foster homes to help us rescue some feral kittens living on the street before winter. We are pleased to have this adorable group of kittens kittens safe in foster care and available for adoption.

Due to the warm fall, there were lots of kittens born late and we have several other litters of kittens in our sights – just in location in the core area! So, if you are interested in giving a temporary home to some young kittens currently out in the cold, please let us know at saskpeopleforanimals@gmail.com

Many of these kittens are the offspring of the kittens that we were not able to rescue last fall due to lack of foster space and the pattern is repeating itself this fall, and it will continue until we are able to get all the numerous strays at this location sterilized.

Unfortunately, there is at least one litter of young kittens that is already too old to socialize for adoption, so we will have to do our best to support them outdoors until they can be trapped and sterilized in the spring, before even more kittens are born. Colonies with un-sterilized cats can easily double in size over the course of a season without intervention.

That’s why PFA is always putting out calls for more kitten foster homes. There is always more kittens out there!

Intrepid Little Ink

This little guy is Ink, a lone kitten rescued with his mama from the General Hospital area.

Unfortunately, Ink’s littermates perished while we were waiting for foster space to open up and the mama suffered numerous injuries while trying to protect her kittens in an area teeming with strays.

However, we are happy to have Ink and his mama safe in a foster home, and the little guy has adapted well. He was quickly integrated into the home and likes to travel around looking for mischief.

Ink is vaccinated and de-wormed and up for adoption.

Osho Had Nowhere to Go

Little Osho was rescued wandering around by himself in the downtown area near the Hotel Saskatchewan. That's definitely no place for a sweet, friendly little cat to be and Osho knew it, too. Lucky for clever little Osho, he picked a former PFA volunteer as his rescuer and hopped right into her car with her as she was about to leave after unsuccessfully looking for an owner in the area.

A found report was filed but sadly he remains unclaimed, another likely victim of abandonment. It's hard to imagine, but many people simply move away and leave their cats behind.
Osho is a super little cat with a gentle and loving personality. He loves to play and snuggle. He is now neutered, vaccinated and ready to find a new home to love him and keep him safe.

Layla!

This little cutie-pie is Layla, a snuggly 6-month old female who was was rescued by a kind family that lives near one of our feeding stations in North Central. They noticed she'd been hanging around stray for a while and appears to have been abandoned.

This lovely tortie-tabby girl was quickly named "Ice-Cream" by the young child in the home as her pretty colours reminded the little girl of her favourite sweet treat! Come to think of it, she does sort of remind me of vanilla-caramel swirl!

"Ice-Cream" has now been re-named Layla but remains just as sweet as her original name. She is spayed and safe in foster care and will be listed for adoption shortly.

Big Daddy Bugsy

One of our favourite rescues ever is a special flame-point Siamese cross named Bugsy who was fostered and adopted by dedicated PFA volunteer Sarah.

Bugsy is a handsome and sweet-natured cat who always helps make the new rescues that Sarah fosters feel welcome. It's like he knows that he was in their shoes not that long ago, so he does his part to ease the way for them. What a great guy!

Here he is happily snuggling with our little foster cat, Iggy!

Kitten Foster Homes Urgently Needed

These adorable little kittens were recently born to a feral mama at one of our colonies in the core area of the city.

We really want to get them off the street before the weather turns and winter sets in, but we are quite simply max'd out in terms of our ability to take in new cats. There is no room for them unless we are able to get new foster homes on board.

These kittens are currently young enough to socialized and be adopted as pets. In a few weeks, though, the opportunity will no longer be there.

We need kitten foster homes urgently to help save some of the late season litter before winter. All you need is a spare room and some compassion for animals in need. PFA can provide the supplies and support. Please contact us at saskpeopleforanimals@gmail.com if you can help.

Sweet Siamese Kitten Traumatized By Bullies

This teeny-tiny 5-week old kitten is Swizzle. Swizzle was recently rescued by a PFA adoptive family when they noticed some nasty kids tormenting her.

The kids were pushing her off a ledge and throwing her up into the air, trying to make her do flips. The poor baby kitten was absolutely terrified.

Once they got her home and safe, they discovered that Swizzle is a super sweet and friendly little girl who just loves to be held and cuddled. Today she is being checked over by a vet to ensure that she doesn't have any injuries or lasting damage. Then it's off to a foster home, soon to be listed for adoption.

We are so glad that someone was there to rescue little Swizzle and get her to safety. She could have been seriously injured or even killed without intervention.
Please remember that animal abuse is against the law. Charges can be laid if there are witnesses or other evidence to support the case. If you witness animal abuse of any kind, please report it to Animal Protection at 777-7700.

Best Buds - Bud and Laurel

These two best pals are Bud and Laurel, two cats rescued a year apart by feral team member and foster mom Dona.

Bud was rescued in August 2009 as an emaciated stray, and was quickly determined to be a senior cat (11-12 years old) suffering from hyperthyroidism. He would not have survived much longer on the street. Bud is one of the sweetest, friendliest cats we have ever known and he is much loved by all who know him. He has found his forever home with Dona.

Laurel is a young female rescued alone, pregnant and hungry on the north central feeding route in the summer. She is very sweet, soft and snuggly and fits in great with her cat companions. Laurel is currently listed for adoption, and we are hoping she gets her own loving home soon.

Why Do Cats Land on Their Feet?

They say that a cat always lands on its feet and most of the time, it's true. Cats have amazing agility and balance.

However, it isn't always the case. The longer the distance they fall, the more likely they are to be injured. Patchy, one of our sweet foster cats, is an example of a cat with damaged ligaments due to a fall from a high surface (she has recovered well, but will always have a limp).

Click here to read an article from PetPlace.com on why cats land on there feet (and what can happen when they don't).

Little Iggy-Cat!

This adorable little Muffin is Iggy, a 3-4 month old kitten found starving near the dump in Indian Head. She was rescued by a kind lady in White City who has partnered with PFA to rescue cats in the past.

Just as PFA was scrambling to find a foster home for this little one, she was adopted by a cat-loving lady from England who had to leave behind her pets when she moved, and is really missing them.

We were optimistic that Iggy had a home, but unfortunately the neighbour in the suite next door suffered a severe allergic reaction and Iggy had to go after only a few days. Luckily, we were able to place her in a loving PFA foster home and we will work on getting her a real forever home.

Fawn is Fabulous!

This pretty and precious little kitten is Fawn, a tiny female who was rescued running around a golf course outside the city all by herself at the age of only 6 weeks.

Fawn had really bad ear mites and a serious case of worms when she was rescued but has been treated and is now living it up in her safe and loving foster home, where she is thriving.

Fawn is a super sweet and friendly kitten and she loves to meet new people, even though she was obviously on her own for some time outside.

She is super soft, super cuddly and super cute with her little white ruff!

Smokey is Super!

This lovely gray boy is Smokey, a young cat who used to be among the many strays in the North Central areas struggling to survive.

Lucky for him he found his way to a kind PFA volunteers yard, where he has had access to food and an outdoor shelter while we waited for a space in foster care to open up for him. Leah has rescued many, many cats in her neighbourhood, including former PFA foster cats Pumpkin and Socks, Archie and Sammy, who are all now happily adopted.
He's doing great with his new foster family, and is a very cuddly and affectionate boy who will be listed for adoption shortly.

We are very grateful for people like Leah who watch out for the strays in their neighbourhoods and give guys like Smokey a chance at the good life in a loving home.

Purrfect Little Percy!

This handsome little fellow showed up underneath the doorstep of a kind lady living in the downtown area. After feeding him for a while, she became concerned that he was homeless and took him in to foster him, and asked PFA for help in getting him a home.

Percy is super cute and friendly. He's really happy to be inside and to be cared for by a person, and he is definitely enjoying his meal times. Once we are certain that there is no owner searching for this little guy, we will be listing him for adoption.

Another Day, Another Stray

This handsome young male was found starving near an apartment complex in the north end, likely a victim of abandonment. He has a tatoo and we believe his name is Alvin.

He's a friendly and affectionate cat and very happy to be safe, warm and well fed.

Currently, we are trying to find his owner through the vet clinic. In the meantime, we're seeking a temporary foster home for this little guy, as he is rather stressed by the other cats in his emergency spot. He is already neutered and will be vaccinated and listed for adoption if we can't return him to his home.
