Sweet Serena and her Babies

Meet Serena, a beautiful calico mama cat who was rescued after two of our dedicated feral team members came across her giving birth in an old styrofoam cooler. Our volunteers spent a long afternoon in a mouse infested hole to monitor Serena and ensure she wasn't disturbed while birthing the kittens - and then trying to get her to a safe place where she could care for her babies in peace.

Despite a number of frantic calls, there was no-one available to take in the little family on short notice so the garage of one of the feral feeders was quickly converted into a safe haven for Serena and her babies.

Sadly, one of the kittens didn't make it, but Serena and her remaining two kittens are thriving. Serena is a very calm and affectionate cat who is a very good mama cat to her babies, and the kittens, Chorizo and Bratwurst, are beyond adorable! They look just like their mama, with beautiful markings. They are now three weeks old and starting to explore outside the nest.

The kittens will be available for adoption at 8 weeks of age and we are sure they will find homes quickly. However, mama Serena will need a foster or adoptive home as well and it's always much harder for mama cats.

Please consider opening your heart and your home to a cute kitten or a sweet mama cat who will need lots of love to comfort her once her kittens are adopted.

An Update on Sweet Pete!

Earlier this spring, the PFA feral team rescued a terrific young cat named Pete who quickly charmed everyone he met. We were sad to learn that Pete was positive for FIV, but were thrilled when a kind lady stepped up to foster him and we are glad to report that he is thriving - and very much loved.

Here is a fantastic update from Pete's foster mom, who has decided to make this sweet boy her own!

Readers first met Pete on the April 16th blog entitled “Another Day Another Stray”. Pete was a pretty sorry looking character. Life on the street wasn’t kind to this obviously tame cat. Thankfully, the kindness of People for Animals members and supporters saved him from what was likely going to be a bleak, short future.

Here’s where I come in. I’m not really a cat person. I had one as a very young child and took in a couple of strays for short stays over the years, but nothing beyond that. I moved into a new condo and met two wonderful, caring People for Animals members – Phil and Sandra. In chatting I learned my new home was a cat-friendly building so much so they’ll find you a cat. Phil suggested fostering a cat is a great way to decide if you want one permanently. This is a very successful marketing strategy because once a cat crosses your threshold, you’re hooked!

It didn’t take long before I learned there was stray needing a temporary home. Ya, he was temporary for about five minutes and now he’s home to stay.

Pete has recovered well from his street days and hopefully has forgotten them completely. His hair is growing back nicely as you can see from these photos. Pete’s gained a pound and now seems to be at a healthy weight. The warmth of his personality has flourished. No visitor to our home is immune to his charms. Even my feline fearing daughter admits he’s “kinda cute”.

There’s something to be said for the healing powers of pets. My dementia stricken Mom brightens up just at the sight of Pete. He seems to know she needs some extra care and rarely leaves her side. And there’s nothing like being greeted at the door after a long, stressful day at work by a furry bundle of unconditional love.

So, to any of the readers who are teetering on making a decision about cat ownership, do it – I guarantee you won’t regret it.

Former Foster Cat Fries Landed Well!

This cute little grey tabby is Fries, a former PFA foster cat who was in foster care for months before finding his forever home at PetSmart. He is now enjoying the good life as a cherished pet with a great human family and a cuddly cat buddy.

He is a lucky little guy and we are so pleased for him!

Eco-Friendly Tupperware Fundraiser

PFA has partnered with one of our proud adoptive moms to host a summer-friendly fundraiser with Tupperware.

Tupperware offers a line of eco-friendly food storage and kitchen products that are perfect for picnics, BBQs and also for packing your lunch to eat in the park.

Tupperware will donate 40% of purchases to PFA, which is a very generous contribution, and summer is our busiest time with the trapping and sterlization of feral cats in full swing and many kittens and cats in foster care.

Please contact us at saskpeopleforanimals@gmail.com to request a flyer.

A Cute Kitten Quote...

"Kitten: a small homicidal muffin on legs; affects human sensibilities to the point of endowing the most wanton and ruthless acts of destruction with near mythical ovetones of cuteness. Not recommended for beginners. Get at least two."

Dexter at Home

This handsome boy, Dexter, is one of our Lipton cats, rescued early in the spring to avoid being relocated to a farm after the town his owner lived in enacted a by-law limiting residents to only two pets.

Dexter's unique good looks and super-affectionate personality quickly got him noticed by a kind cat-loving family, and he is now settling into his forever home with them!

Here are some pics of Dexter soaking up the love!
