Another great Fundraising Potluck!

Thanks so much to everyone who came out to the potluck last Sayurday night, despite the cold weather! We had a wonderful time. Much amazing food was shared, there was some competitive bidding on the silent auction, and we were able to share all of the exciting things that have been happening with the feral cat team and pet rescue in PFA.
The potluck raised $1301 that will go directly to our vet bills from spaying and neutering all of our rescued animals.
Many thanks to Pat and Dona who worked so hard to make the silent auction a success.

Managing Cats and Allergies

Each year People for Animals rescues many stray, abandoned and neglected cats that truly need our help just to survive. So it is somewhat discouraging to see the number of tame cats being surrendered to overcrowded animal shelters and rescue groups because of manageable issues such as allergies.

Of course it is important not to compromise a person's health and well-being or put them at risk for more severe health problems. But, for people who love their cats and want to keep them, there are ways to manage allergies and still have pets.

Cats.About.com (Mercia Tapping) offers the following tips for reducing allergy symptoms: don't let cats to sleep with you (or keep them out of the bedroom altogether), washing bedding in hot water at least twice monthly, use of HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) air filters and frequent vacuuming with a HEPA vacuum cleaner including furniture, use of vapour steam cleaners on furniture and carpets (I personally use this method and a HEPA vacuum), wash your hands after petting your cat and avoid touching your eyes, and washing your cat. You don't necessarily need to give your cat a bath - veterinarians may offer topical liquids to apply to the cat's coat, or you can use pre-moistened kitty wipes or a damp cloth.

These methods can help manage symptoms even if they don't completely go away. Please visit http://cats.about.com/od/allergiesandcats/a/allergictocat.htm for more details on the tips above. If you or someone you know is struggling with cat allergies, please consider trying some of these methods before surrendering your pet to a shelter.

Meet Verbal!

Verbal was rescued from one of our feeding stations in North Central Regina last week. He had clearly been on the streets for some time, and had a painful looking abcess on his neck. However, even living with sickness and hunger couldn't dull his amazing personality! Verbal quickly won the hearts of his two rescuers, Pat and Dona. He was neutered and received medical care at the vet, and is now in foster care. This sweet boy can't believe his luck. He is a big talker (along with being a VERY big cat), and loves to tell his foster mom all about his day. And so affectionate!!! It's inconceivable that Verbal could have been stuck on the streets forever without our help.
Once we are sure that he is well on the road to recovery, we'll list Verbal for adoption and he'll have a happy ever after kind of life.

It's a year for Manx kittens!

Mally and Daisy were two kittens born to a female cat that was rescued with her litter in the fall. Star (the momma cat) didn't just nurse her own kittens - she adopted a litter of orphaned kittens that we had rescued as well! In total, Star nursed 9 kittens. Star has now been adopted, and all of the kittens that she raised have found good homes as well. Mally and Daisy were adopted together by a family member of their foster family, and they have thrived. Both girls only have little stubs for tails.

Annie update

Our little rescued kitten Annie has been placed in a foster home and is thriving!
Her foster mom Roxanne emailed me with this photo and the following comments:
"Just wanted to let you know things with Annie are going really well. I can't get over what a sweetheart she is!!!! I don't think she's stopped purring since you dropped her off....even while eating her food, lol. She's just thrilled to pieces she has someone to love and cuddle her. In fact I'm having difficulty typing this email right now because she keeps trying to lay across my hands haha.
I've attached a pic...this was taken right after she devoured a can of wet food. So her face is covered in food."
