A Rescued Family Looking for Homes

This good-looking group of cats were fortunate to be rescued by an animal loving family from BC who found a pregnant female cat on their doorstep shortly after moving in last fall.

The family adopted the mama, but we have three beautiful, sweet and friendly 10 month old cats up for adoption:

  • Karma, female, a beautiful longer-haired white cat with a super-fluffy tail and super-sweet temperament;
  • Kola, male - a handsome tabby with lovely reddish ticked fur similar to the Abyssinian breed, and a fun and energetic personality; and,
  • Polar Bear - a short-haired white girl who loves attention and likes being in on the action.
They will be listed for adoption shortly. If one of these cats might be of interest to you, please contact us at saskpeopleforanimals@gmail.com

Update - Fuzzy-Wuzzy

We recently wrote about a sweet rescued female named Fuzzy-Wuzzy who was rescued after spending the winter dumpster diving.

After being tagged feral and designated to be sterilized and released, Fuzzy's rescuer was pleasantly surprised to have a sweet and loving lap cat on her hands who was already spayed, but had somehow ended up homeless.

The street life is extra hard on longer-haired cats, as their coats mat quickly, causing them considerable discomfort. Fuzzy had to be shaved, but her fur is growing in beautifully, and she is becoming a more loving and confident cat each day. Plus, she is looking fabulous!

Fuzzy is good with young children and other cats. She is very cuddly and affectionate, and a lap cat once she gets to know you. She is also a chatty little girl who mews softly to tell you about her day and often has the tip of her tongue sticking out!

She is available for adoption, and will make a wonderful companion for a lucky adopter. Please contact us at saskpeopleforanimals@gmail.com for more info.

A Black Cat Affair

It's a sad truth for shelters and rescue groups all over Canada that black cats have the lowest adoption rates and the highest euthanasia rates.

It's such a shame, because they are often very healthy, sweet and loving cats with great personalities who are simply being overlooked due to their coat colour. Some of the sweetest and most awesome cats we've ever rescued are black cats!

Here are the Top Ten Reasons to Adopt A Black Cat, from the rescue group It's All About the Cats, Inc.

10. You can always find your black cat in the snow - or you can find them easily on any light colored surface such your carpet or your floral bedspread.

9. Black goes with everything. It's true. You know it. We know it. You've got your black power suit on, your white cat jumps on your lap, it's all over. But if your black cat wants a little love and affection, no harm done --your look is only enhanced!

8. Black cats look like little panthers. Their regal breeding is very apparent under their sleek black coats.

7. A black cat will match any décor. You won't have to redecorate your house to coordinate with your cat. They are totally willing to pose on gold velvet, white velvet, pink velvet, or your sofa cushion - to add taste and beauty to any room of your home. They'll perch on the brocade chair; sleep on the rug; curl in the middle of the bed. You name it, they're willing to go to great lengths to help you make your home beautiful. They’re that kind of cat.

6. Black is beautiful. There's the deep auburn shaded black, the blue black, the black with tiny white highlights here and there, the sleek black, the fluffy black, the black with bunny-soft fur, the black with yellow eyes, the black with green eyes, the black with grey eyes ... well, you get the picture. Black is not just black; there are as many different kinds of black cats as there are cats!

5. Bad Luck, Schmuck! When you love a black cat, luck is on your side!

A black cat crossing your path signifies
that the animal is going somewhere.
- Groucho Marx
4. Black cats have more fun. You only thought blondes had more fun. Black cats are fun-loving, playful, full of spark and energy. They try harder to make up for the image they somehow got as dull and dreary. They're like the sun streaming in a window on a rainy day; like the circus coming to town; they're just plain fantastic.

3. Black cats are loving. Look, they know their reputation -- scary. They've seen the illustrations -- skinny cats with nasty long teeth. And they're nothing like that. They go overboard to be as affectionate and loving as any fluffy white, pink-nosed bunny kitty could be, and you get all the other benefits too.
2. Love knows no color! Your cat doesn't care what color YOUR hair is!
And the # 1 reason to adopt a black cat is that Black Cats are the least likely to get adopted!

Now that you have good reason to consider a black cat, please check out the wonderful array of black cats that PFA has to offer adopters seeking a furry feline friend:

1. Sweet but shy Duster, rescued as a young kitten who was almost too old to take into foster care, but was too young to leave out on the street in the dead of winter. He has really come out of his shell, and his hoping he gets a chance to prove how loving he is to a forever family.

2.The cute and charismatic Jeremiah, a PFA volunteer favourite who has charmed everyone he has met since being rescued near death on a frigid January day.

3. The cuddly and perky Pepsi, a sweet young cat who is coming up on her one-year anniversary in foster care in June, passed over several times despite having looks and personality galore.

4. Calm and gentle Andy Black, another winter rescue who was starving, frostbitten and scared but quickly warmed his rescuers heart (and lap) with his affectionate personality.

5. The awesome little Fuzzy-Wuzzy, a really gentle and sweet female cat rescued this spring after wintering outdoors at a feral cat shelter. She quickly proved to be tame, but needed to be shaved due to matting after a rough life outdoors.

Update - Mama Lucy and the Sedley Kittens

Time flies when you are fostering kittens, and these little babies are growing up fast and gaining independence daily. They are now 4 weeks old and are being introduced to the litter box, and soft food.

So far, little Emily Starr (black kitten) is at the head of the class and is proving to be the most adventurous of the group, and she is quite clever as well!

Her brother, Gilbert (black and white) joins her in her adventures, while the other two, Marilla (grey) and Cuthbert (orange) are more the laid-back and snuggly sort. Nothing wrong with that!

Mama Lucy (tortie) is very attentive, but still loves to play and is relaxing more each day.

All are thriving, and will be available for adoption in mid-June.

A Close Call - And A Second Chance for a Home

I am fortunate to be able to write many blog posts about PFA success stories and updates from adoptive families letting us know how much the cat they adopted is loved and cherished.

However, not every cat or kitten gets a happy ending. Sometimes, despite our best efforts to find responsible and loving homes, a cat ends up in a bad situation.

Suki is one of those cats. Originally rescued as a tiny kitten in the spring of 2009 (bottom pic), Suki's sweet little face quickly attracted attention and she was snapped up fast by a young couple.

But, several weeks ago, one of our volunteers was notified by someone wanting help with a stray cat, and at the same time by another person asking if she could return a cat that she'd adopted. Luckily, our volunteer made the connection and realized they were talking about the same cat - Suki.

Not so luckily, by the time we realized what was going on, Suki had already been surrendered to the Humane Society. She had never been spayed and had no tattoo # for ID, so it was a challenge to identify her and get her back, but luckily we did, with the help of RHS staff.

She was terrified, thin and full of ear mites and had obviously been neglected for some time. She was scared and hostile at first, but once we got her into a safe and caring foster home, she began to respond to kindness immediately.

Her foster mom reports that Suki is now doing great and is back to being the sweet and affectionate little cat we rescued.

Now that she has recovered, we will be listing her for adoption again, and this time we want to be sure she gets the loving home she deserves. For more information on Suki, please contact us at saskpeopleforanimals@gmail.com

Crazy for Calicos!

PFA rescues cats of all colours, coat patterns, types and temperaments but calicos are usually not very common.

However, this year we have a number of beautiful and sweet calicos up for adoption, both classic - orange/black/white, and dilute - peach/grey/white.

We have (from top to bottom): Mitzy, Simone, Maeve, Gabby, Ruby and Taeh.

All of our calicos are very well socialized with people and other animals and they just LOVE attention. If one of these multi-coloured sweetie-pies catches your eye, please contact us at saskpeopleforanimals@gmail.com

Stunning Siamese Cross Kittens

It's kitten season, and there are certainly plenty of kittens to go around. Check out our newest kittens rescues: Bailey, Brandy and Gibson.

These gorgeous little kittens are 8 weeks old and they are still a bit shy, but are busy being socialized in a busy foster home with kids, a dog, and several cats. They will be ready for adoption in no time!

For more information on these sweet kittens, contact us at saskpeopleforanimals@gmail.com

Beautiful Boy Cats!

Check out these loving and handsome fellows, all recent rescues who need loving homes. All three of these gorgeous guys have been neutered and vaccinated, and are seeking caring permanent families with whom they can share their love!

We have the handsome and charismatic Rudy (dark tabby), who was picked up at a feral feeding station during our spring Trap/Neuter/Release blitz. There was definitely no releasing Rudy, who easily charms everyone he meets, and who has proven to be very affectionate.

Dysart (orange and white) is a Lipton rescue who was designated for life on a farm until a kind PFA volunteer offered to foster him long enough to assess his potential for adoption. While Dysart is still a bit shy with strangers, he is definitely the kind of loving and playful cat meant for life a household pet, not struggling to survive as a mouser.

Finally, we have the lovely Ginger, another Lipton rescue, a sweet but shy orange guy with a beautiful coat and pretty but sad eyes. Ginger is an older cat (5-6) who has been waiting a very long time for a loving home.

Please contact us at saskpeopleforanimals@gmail.com if you think one of these boys might be the cat for you!

Here is our latest Sedley family, Mama Lucy and her kittens, hanging out together in their foster home. The babies are three weeks old now, and are starting to become mobile. The babies are Emily Starr (black), Gilbert (tuxedo), Cuthbert (orange) and Marilla (grey).

Lucy is enjoying some TLC from her foster family and has been playing like a kitten herself with her new toys!

2 Young Male Kittens

PFA has rescued two young male kittens in the last few days who need foster homes. They are older kittens who have been deemed to be too old by most of our kitten foster homes (who prefer the little ones) , and are still too kittenish for those who prefer adult cats - and those foster homes are already overloaded anyway.

Little Willie, the tabby, is 5 months old and way too young to be facing a life on the streets. He is sweet, calm and affectionate and must have belonged to someone, but somehow he ended up on his own (and with an injured tail).

Smudge is a bit older, likely 6-10 months, and also very sweet and loving. We know someone owned him once, because he had a collar. Sadly, he must have been lost or abandoned some time ago because upon rescue, it was discovered that the collar was embedded in his neck, causing a laceration that became infected.

Both are sweet boys that need a 2nd chance for a happy home. Please contact us at saskpeopleforanimals@gmail.com if you are interested in fostering or adopting one of these little guys.
