Sad News for Sweet Spongebob

Spongebob is a terrific orange tabby rescued from a feeding station with terrible wounds from scratching at his ear mites.

He was taken to a vet clinic to be treated and neutered, and he quickly won over a staff member who offered to foster him. Just when things were going well for this sweet guy, we got the bad news that he was positive for the Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV).

Cats with FIV can lead healthy lives and can live as long as non-FIV cats if they receive proper care. But, it is a communicable disease so Spongebob can not be fostered with other cats. He needs a foster home with either no other cats, or possibly a cat that is already FIV positive.

Spongebob loves to play and be petted, and he really enjoys being with people. If you don't have a cat currently and can offer Spongebob a foster or adoptive home where he can heal, relax and enjoy some TLC, please contact us at pfasask@gmail.com.

Missing A Fur Coat

This is little Andi, a young male cat who was recently rescued from a PFA feeding station in North Central. Andi is a lovely longer-haired boy but his time on the streets left him severely matted, so he had to be shaved to relieve the painful pulling on his skin, and to allow his fur to grow back in a healthy way.

Poor Andi seems to be a bit bewildered and embarrassed about his newly bald state, but the good news is that he is in a kind foster home where he has lots of soft and cozy places to cuddle up in, including a nice warm lap!

Bingo Volunteers Needed

Fundraising bingos are one of PFA's biggest sources of revenue, and our volunteer base for these bingos is very small. Our bingo volunteers earn over $15/ hour per individual, per shift, all of which goes directly towards veterinary care expenses as a condition of our bingo license.

The shifts are split so that volunteers only have to give up 3-4 hours at a time, for a huge pay-off that benefits many rescued cats.

We always need volunteers for the weekday bingos, and we are still short a few for the bingo this Sunday. If you have a few hours to spare each months and would like to make a difference to a rescued cat, please contact us at bingoinfo@people4animals.ca

Former Rescues Enjoying the Good Life!

These cute and cuddly young male cats started out in a tough situation on the streets, but both landed in awesome new homes shortly after being rescued.

Boomer, the black cat formerly known as Kahuna, was rescued as a tiny kitten along with his litter mates, and nurtured in a loving foster home until he found his furr-ever family. His adopters say this: Boomer became fast friends with their chihuahua, Molly. They are inseparable, they play together, sleep together & give each other baths :) Boomer is an incredible cat with quite a personality & is always getting into mischief! We are so happy that we made him a part of our family!

Roger is an adorable and friendly little tabby found abandoned at a PFA feeding station a few weeks ago. Our feeders knew he was much too sweet and loving to live the life of a street stray, so he was rescued and sent off to PetSmart, where he was adopted in less than a day by a staff member who fell in love!

Both boys are doing awesome, and we are thrilled that they found loving homes.

Tips for Adopting a Pet

Fido, Snowball or Goldie–no matter the critter, study after study shows that pets are good for our health. Their unconditional love and wonderful kindness reduce our stress levels and increase our serotonin intake. Sadly, fewer than half of family pets live out their lives with their original families. That’s an estimated seven million animals entering our shelter system every year, many simply through the irresponsibility of careless owners. If you’re thinking of adopting an animal for yourself or your family, here are some tips:

• Avoid impulses “There are so many great (shelter) dogs and cats in need of a home,” says Babara Savidge, owner of Olive: Green Goods for Modern Dogs. “That said, don’t be completely swayed by a cute face. Take some time to think about what’s important to you in a pet. Make a list of what you want, what you don’t want, and what you can compromise on–before you even look. A little pre-thought will go a long way to ensuring a good fit for both parties.”

• Meet Your Match. More than 250 shelters across the U.S. use a “Meet your Match” program. The potential owners are required to fill out lengthy questionnaires stating desires and behaviors. In this way, the more knowledgeable handlers at the shelters can point the owners in the direction of a breed or animal that would suit their lifestyle well. Occasionally, owners are introduced to breeds that they never would have considered, helping “less-popular” pets find loving homes.

• Rely on the shelter workers for advice and knowledge. Many pet stores view each pet as a potential sale, while the shelter workers, often volunteers, are invested in every animal they help and want to find the placement that will work best for all parties.

• Do your research. Just because you live in an apartment doesn’t mean you can’t adopt. “Several large breed dogs, older dogs and cats are well-suited to apartment life,” says Shannon Boyer of the Arizona Animal Welfare League. “These animals are pretty sedentary and are very happy and healthy with just a couple short walks each day.”

• Introduce your current pets. Many shelters will allow you to bring your current pets into the environment to ensure that everyone feels comfortable with the new addition. If your adoptee is shy, many shelters have programs that will help with training and socializing.

Remember, you are now responsible for a life so this is not a decision to be taken lightly. Consider the pros and cons. Are you ready for both the work and rewards that come with owning a pet?

World Spay Day

Tuesday, February 28th is World Spay Day, a day to recognize the importance of spaying and neutering pets to prevent the overpopulation problems that lead to overcrowded shelters and increased euthanization rates.

In addition to preventing unwanted litters, sterilization can also help prevent serious health problems in cats and dogs such as reproductive cancers. Spaying and neutering benefits everyone.

Foster Homes Urgently Needed for Kitten, Puppy

PFA is seeking foster placements as soon as possible for two animals that need to be removed from their current foster home due to a young child's recent diagnosis of asthma.

Copper is a shy but sweet 7-month old kitten who is neutered and vaccinated. He is great with kids and other animals. He enjoys children so we'd love to find a young family with kids for him.

Sasha is a 6-month old puppy who is crate trained and house trained. She has had her shots and rabies vaccination and will be spayed as soon as all her baby teeth fall out. Sasha is a well mannered puppy that with good training can be a great companion.

Safe From the Storm

This cute and fluffy little guy, Andi, has been hanging around stray at a feeding station in North Central for a few months now. Friendly and affectionate, we were hoping that he had a home in the area.

However, he hasn't been claimed and with a winter storm looming yesterday, Andi was scooped and taken to the vet clinic where he will be neutered and then listed for adoption.

This sweet boy is happy to be off the streets, and is looking for a new home that will give the him the love and care he deserves.

Spongebob the Cat

Meet Spongebob, a handsome adult male recently rescued from a PFA feeding station, intact, hungry and suffering from some serious skin wounds.

Although the wounds look quite serious, they are mostly self-inflicted due to a terrible case of ear mites that was causing Spongebob a lot of discomfort.

While he looks a bit worse for the wear, Spongebob is in great spirits and is happy to be warm and well-fed, and to have those pesky ear mites treated! He is on the mend and has proven to be a very sweet and affectionate boy who enjoys attention and adores catnip toys. You can tell how happy he is to be rescued!

Spongebob is looking for a new forever home that will love him and keep him safe so that he doesn't have to suffer ever again. He will be listed for adoption soon.

In the meantime, we would love to find a foster home for Spongebob where he can get some TLC and recover from his wounds.

An Update on Alan (formerly Muggins)

This is Alan (formerly Muggins) a young black cat who was adopted as a kitten back in 2009. Alan's family is kind enough to keep in touch and give us updates on how he is doing.

It's wonderful to see that Alan is regarded as a true family member in this cat-loving clan. This is their most recent update:

Alan is the light of our son Grayson's life. When our little boy (7 months now) sees Alan, his face lights up like nobody's business! He reaches out for him and poor Alan... he just sits there like a nice boy and takes all Grayson's "love" (abuse?) Yankin' on his fur, trying to put his ears in his mouth. And when Gray doesn't feel good, there's Alan to make him feel better.

He's a big part of our happy little family. :)

A Pretty Little (Pregnant) Kitty - Felicity!

This adorable little tabby is Felicity, a young female tabby found pregnant and abandoned, and reliant on a PFA feeding station for food.

PFA feral team volunteers couldn't bear to leave this sweet, loving and friendly little mama cat on the streets and she is now safe and sound at a vet clinic awaiting a spay in the next day or two.

Felicity is a very sweet and affectionate little cat and we would love to find a foster home for her, rather than having her board or go to a pet store as we are very full right now.

Sweet siblings Pita and Miss Chevious were recently fortunate to find a great new home together. Their new family send us these pics of the girls making themselves at home.

Pita loves to hang out with her new dad at the computer, while Miss Chevious prefers to lounge in a comfy chair. This is after they finish playing the new custom built cat tree made just for them!

We are so thrilled that they were able to be adopted together, and that they are being spoiled in their home.

What a difference a year can make!

Last spring, we blogged about a new rescued cat, Fuzzy Wuzzy, who had spent her winter scavenging in dumpsters in North Central Regina for food. I had watched her through the cold winter, trying many times to get close to her in vain as she was surviving on the streets in and around my home. In the spring, I started my annual round of trapping to catch and sterilize local strays, and was able to get Fuzzy almost immediately.

Upon examination at the vets, we discovered that not only was this sweet girl already spayed, but she was docile and tame! Sadly, she didn't have an ear tattoo, and despite filing found reports, we were never able to find her original owners.

Fuzzy integrated beautifully into my home as a foster cat, and last fall she was adopted by Brenda. Brenda has stayed in touch with me, and last night she sent me this photo of our Fuzzy-girl, all cuddled up on the couch with her mom. It is incredibly rewarding to know that this amazing cat has gone from being horribly matted, hungry, and cold, to being a pampered and beloved pet, all in the space of one year. On freezing nights this winter, I thought back to how sad I was to see Fuzzy out in the cold last year, and was so grateful to know that she won't experience that ever again. Many thanks to Brenda for her love and care for this amazing feline, and for keeping in touch!

Terrific Teddy on the Move...

We have received the sad news that one of our favourite rescues of all time, Teddy, is in need of a new home.

Teddy (Tedster) was rescued as a sickly, scraggly stray tom in the fall of 2010. He was assumed to be feral, but once we got him trapped and in to a clinic for neutering, he quickly demonstrated his sweet, gentle and loving ways and we were hooked!

Teddy soon attracted a home with a great couple who doted on him and ensured he had the best of care while he recovered from his lengthy time on the street, and who adore him with all their hearts. He has come a long way from his initial rescue, as these pics of a shiny, healthy cat demonstrate.

Unfortunately, the pair is in a state of flux right now while one is completing her education and is assigned to 5 different practicum locations over the next year - definitely no life for a cat!

So we are looking for a new loving home for our beautiful survivor, Teddy. He is ok with other cats but he loves attention and thrives on his own. He has been on a raw food diet as well, so we are hoping his new family will continue that special care.

Marvelous Marta!

This petite little lady is Marta, a young female who was found huddled in the window well of a central Regina home during the cold snap last week, trying desperately to get warm.

The homeowner took pity on the poor frozen cat and took her inside. She has multiple pets already, so she contacted us for help in finding Marta a new home.

Marta is a lovely, fine-boned cat with big, glowing yellow eyes and a very sweet and affectionate personality. She is now in a foster home where she will hopefully put on some weight, make some new feline friends and find a new home where she will be cared for and loved forever.

Black cat happily ever after

Recently we heard from Garrett, who had adopted both Inka and Onyx from us as kittens last summer.

"Inka and Onyx are doing great. I couldn't be happier having them around. Both of them are healthy and lively and have adapted really well to their new environment.

I tend to spoil them with new toys and treats, the newest present was some little vinyl tunnels for them to run and play in, which they love. Hoping to build them a new cat tower soon as well! Its hard to get good pictures of Onyx, as soon as he sees me with the phone out he either flees or sticks his face right in it to see what it is, haha... Inka is more patient in that regard."

Happy Days are Here for Dexter!

Dexter is one of several cats PFA rescued in the spring of 2011 after a small town passed a by-law strictly limiting pet ownership to 2 animals per home, and leaving one kind woman who rescued local strays in urgent need of help to find homes for her cats.

Dexter's unique markings and friendly, affectionate nature helped him find a home quickly. One look at his sweet face on Facebook and his future family was hooked. When they met him in person, his friendly and loving personality made them love him even more.

Here is what they said about Dexter in a recent update:

Dexter is doing great! He has been such a great addition to our family and we just love, love, LOVE him! He's the only one of all our kitties that loves to be picked up and/or cuddled at any given moment. Dex is happy, healthy, and gets so much love and attention. We just couldn't imagine life without him! :)

In From the Cold!

Winter has returned and it's chilly out there! The cold weather makes it tough on homeless cats, and little Roger is no exception.

Roger, a likely victim of abandonment, has been hanging out at a PFA feeding station recently and caught the eye of one of our volunteers because he is so very sweet and friendly.

With the onset of the frigid temperatures, he was heard crying at the doorstep of a nearby home, trying to get in and out of the cold.

Thankfully, Roger was picked up by one of our volunteers today and is now safe and sound at a vet clinic, waiting to be neutered and listed for adoption.

Razzle-Zazzles!

Meet our sweet tuxedo guy, Zazzles! This sweet baby boy was found out in the cold in the wee hours of the morning a few weeks ago by a shift worker who notified us.

First Place: Star (Sara Bird)

I love my cat Star because she is a survivor and a hero. My friend found her crying on her doorstep a few summers ago. She looked very malnourished. As my friend already had a dog in her "pet free" apartment, I took her in. I had her for a few days and realized she was pregnant. She had five kittens. I kept one and was able to give one to a friend, and People for Animals was able to adopt the others out after I put an ad up. PFA were also interested in Star because of a litter of newborn kittens that were abandoned. They wanted to see if Star would be able to nurse them as well as her own kittens. Star did nurse those abandoned kittens, but due to still being malnourished, she became quite ill. They had to put her on an IV. She eventually recovered and came back home to me and my husband and our three other cats (including her son).

Now she lives a life of comfort and happiness. She enjoys sleeping, eating tuna, and getting hugs from her mommy and daddy, especially her daddy. She has such a cute little personality. Even though she has been with us for the past three years, she still has a bit of that street attitude.

My cats, their sweet personalities, never judgmental, greeting me with enthusiasm at any time of the day, when I cry they give comfort, when I am lonely for companionship, they make me laugh, smile and remind me to take time to enjoy life. With life’s ups and downs, changes, moves, breakups, divorce, they are always there to ground me. They know what to say (meow) and the right empathetic look to give me to communicate a strong important message ‘we are in this together and we are here for you, it is okay’.

First Place: Poncho (Dacie Matchett)

This is Poncho, my chihuahua. A couple years ago we had a house fire and I rescued him from the burning house with my dads two pitbulls, but I'm happy because recently has rescued my life a few times. He alerted me of a few asthma attacked that could've been deadly. I love my dog because he's always so happy to see me when I walk in after school or ready to cuddle when I'm down. He's so cute and I always feel better when he's around. I have had him for 4 years and I would never want those 4 years back. He is my best friend and I love my chihuahua.

First Place: Carol the Hamster (Krista Hopko)

This Carol, a Syrian hamster - approx. 1 year old - I adopted from the Regina Humane Society. I'm so happy that I chose to adopt a pet and give her a second chance at a happy home. This is a photo of Carol waiting to be picked up to come out and play. I supervise her while she explores the hamster-safe spare room in my apartment. Instead of me having to actually pick her up, she'll crawl onto my hand if she wants to come out to play.

A fresh start in life for Sirius

We recently received an update on Pascal, now Sirius Black, from his wonderful adoptive family. This poor old guy was in such rough shape when we rescued him. His longtime owner had passed away, and Sirius had been left alone in the house with the body for a number of days until they were discovered. When Heather (Sirius' adoptive mom) took him in to foster he was depressed, timid, and fragile. However, as he recovered and bonded with his foster family, they realized they wanted to adopt this resilient feline. Now, as you can see from the photos, this wonderful senior cat has a new lease on life!

Heather says: "Sirius has two main buddies at our house: me and Neala (pictured above). He is just so affectionate and patient. He has only ever hissed at the humans in our house twice: once when I was trying to clip his back claws, and once when he was mostly asleep and Neala threw a pillow that landed on him. I have just discovered in the last few days that he drools when he sleeps! When he first came to us, I never saw him grooming himself. I'm not sure if he was just doing it in private, under the bed, but I got the feeling that he just wasn't taking care of himself. Now I see him having a bath regularly. He also sleeps on our bed every night. He used to take off under the bed when we got ready for bed, but now he usually snuggles in between Barry and I. He's a good cat to share the bed with because he doesn't get all put out when you move around and disturb his comfy spot (unlike some other cats I know!)."

We are so grateful for kind souls like Sirius' new family, who reached out to a creature in need and have now been rewarded with a loving and devoted companion.

Wonderful Winnie!

This precious and petite little cat is Winnie, a gorgeous gray female with just a teeny-tiny spot of white on her chest.

Winnie is a recent rescue who was plucked from the cold by a kind PFA supporter and dedicated rescuer who has helped several strays in the past.

She is super sweet, friendly and affectionate and is more than content to be safe, warm and fed. At only 10 months old, her ears show the damage from her struggle out of doors.

This is another of the interesting stories I discovered while checking out how different cultures regard cats. I am a huge tabby cat fan, so this is one of my favourites.

Muezza was the Prophet Muhammad's favorite cat. The most famous story about Muezza recounts how the call to prayer was given, and as Muhammad went to put on one of his robes, he found his cat sleeping on one of the sleeves. The Tale of Tuck

We recently received a request for help with a rescued stray from a young man who has given a home to several strays in the last few years, and who finds that while his heart is big enough for one more, his home is not. So he contacted us about Tuck, who currently resides in his garage.

He has been caring for Tuck for a few months now, ever since he showed up hungry and lonely, he has shared Tuck's tale:

Tuck is a stray who was hanging around my house looking for something to eat. He had the saddest eyes I have ever seen. Honestly, he broke my heart, you could tell that he had never had a friend in his life.

He would always eat the food, but would wait until I was out of reach. Eventually, I was able to pet him while he was eating, and that was it.

"Really", said Tuck "this is what being petted is all about? Have I been missing out!"

Since then he will come up to me looking to be petted. I can pick him up and hold him and he will sit on my lap. In some ways, he is like a little dog, the way he is so excited to see me when I get home.

Cats are cats, and Tuck is no exception. There are two things that he does: 1. Tuck will stand up and put his paws on you, just like a dog. 2. He loves to give kitty kisses (he rubs his jowls against your face when you hold him and on occasion he will give a gentle love bite.)

Like most rescued strays, Tuck loves food more than anything, no matter what is going on, if there is food that is where he wants to be.

I really want to find him a forever home, and would ask that wherever he his fostered that I please be allowed to visit him once in a while until he is adopted.

We are touched by both Tuck the cat, and the kind and caring man who rescued him and has given him such good care. Tuck will be available for adoption shortly!

We recently blogged about a former foster cat Charlotte who made the trip up to the Arctic with her owner Mike. Upon arrival, Mike was informed that the Inuit are afraid of animals, and that no-one would visit him because he has a cat!

This got me thinking about the way that different cultures have perceived cats throughout history. It runs the gamut from idolization and worship in ancient Egypt to persecuting cats along with witches in Europe and the US.

One of my favourite stories about cats comes from Japan, where cats are considered lucky. In Japan, the Maneki Neko is known as the "good fortune" or "good luck" cat. It is usually a sitting cat with paw raised and bent. Legend in Japan has it that a cat waved a paw at a Japanese landlord, who was intrigued by this gesture and went towards it. A few seconds later a lightning bolt struck where the landlord had been previously standing. The landlord attributed his good fortune to the cat's fortuitous action. A symbol of good luck hence, it is most often seen in businesses to draw in money. In Japan, the flapping of the hand is a "come here" gesture, so the cat is beckoning customers. *

Former PFA foster cat Penelope, now happily adopted, demonstrates the lucky symbol! It certainly worked for her.

In my book, I am the lucky one to have my three beautiful, soft, sweet and unconditionally loving little feline friends!

Why I Love My Pet Contest

Everyone needs a pick-me-up this time of year, and what makes us happier than sharing our love for our pets? That's why PFA is hosting a Why I Love My Pet Contest on our Facebook page. Over the next week, we are asking our supporters to tell us why their pets are the best.

Entries (a photo and a description of no more than 100 words) are to be submitted to pfasask@gmail.com by 5 p.m. on Friday, February 3, 2012. There are three categories: Cats, Dogs, and Other Awesome Pets. Multiple entries are welcome. Entries will be judged by a PFA committee, and finalists in each category will be posted to the PFA Facebook page, where fans can participate by "like"ing their favourites to help us decide on the winners.

There are some great prizes up for grabs, including a pet scrapbook kit donated by PFA supporter CleanBreak Services, and gift certificates to Metro Pet Market.

This Little Kitten Lost More Than a Mitten...

...she lost the tip of her ear! Jessie was found on the street in a south regina neighbourhood during last week's bitter cold spell.

A kind couple scooped her up and delivered her to a friend of theirs who just happens to foster kittens for PFA! Jessie is now safe and warm, but has just a touch of the sniffles. She is still leery of the other cats and the dog in the home, but she is very sweet and loves to be petted.

She is starting to warm up to Wyatt, the resident male cat who is famous for nurturing foster cats so we're sure she will adjust quickly.

Jessie has not been claimed by an owner, so we will be listing her for adoption soon.

New Rescue - Chanel

This gorgeous young female cat was found by a kind citizen crying in the bitter cold late last week. Unable to leave her facing the elements, the lady took her inside and contacted PFA for assistance.

She has been named Chanel, due to her exquisite fine features and luxurious soft coat. Chanel is very friendly and snuggly. She is about a year old.

Found reports have been filed, but so far Chanel has not been claimed. We are now seeking a foster home for her, where she can be kept safe and warm while we look for a permanent loving home for her.

PFA cat in the Arctic

Shortly after he adopted Charlotte, now named Onyxia, Mike got a job in Arctic Bay, Nunavut, and decided to take Onyxia with him. She is the first PFA cat to live in the Arctic, so we definitely wanted to hear an update on how she's doing. Here are some excerpts from an email Mike sent us:

My flights were relatively uneventful, with the exception of the travelling-with-a-cat thing. She took it surprisingly well though. Not a peep between Regina and Toronto, and only once between Toronto and Ottawa. The Ottawa to Iqaluit leg she was more irritable, but it could have been a lot worse. The last 3 hour leg [from Iqaluit to Arctic Bay] she complained, but the plane was smaller and noisier.

When I arrived in Arctic Bay, I was met at the 'airport' by my Aunt and Uncle, as well as the Mayor and one of the Hamlet council. I was given a whirl-wind tour of the community and introduced to more than a hundred people (you can imagine the fun I had trying to remember names).

There are 870 people in Arctic Bay, about 35 of which are from Southern Canada (and they're from all over the place). The Inuit are afraid of animals. Well . . . wary. My cat makes a better guard-dog than a sled dog would (and believe me, some of them are massive). I was told by one of the Councillors that I shouldn't expect visitors--including her--on the cat's account. There are people in Arctic Bay that have never seen a cat (or trees, for that matter).

As you can see by the pictures Mike sent us, Onyxia is happy, healthy, and doing well in her new home in Arctic Bay (as a strictly indoor cat, of course!)

Please Keep Pets Safe From the Cold!

This adorable tabby guy is Andy, a little stray who was lucky enough to be rescued from the severe cold last night by a kind animal lover.

Andy is now safe and sound with our friends at the Victoria Veterinary Clinic, waiting to be neutered so that he can go into foster care and be listed for adoption.

Andy is one of the lucky ones. There are many animals that are being left out in the extreme cold, and the Regina Humane Society (RHS) is reminding people to watch for animals in distress. The RHS issued a news release today:

The Regina Humane Society (RHS) reminds the public that during this period of extreme cold weather it is imperative that they be on the lookout for animals in distress.

As we all know, weather conditions in Saskatchewan can change quickly. Even the most winter hardy dog breeds require extra care during the severe temperatures which we are now encountering. Animal owners must consider weather as a major factor in the care and keeping of their animals. Constant monitoring of any pets allowed outdoors is essential to their health and safety.
"There is no exact amount of time an animal can safely be out in temperatures like these,” said
Officer D. Bishop, Supervisor of Animal Protection. “Every type of animal, every breed is different in how it handles weather this cold. What is important is that all animals have proper, heated shelter. Quick, monitored breaks outside are what we strongly recommend.”

The Regina Humane Society is on call 24 hours a day ready to respond to emergency situations. If you know of an animal in distress for any reason, please call 777-7700 immediately. Your call could save a life.

All four of these sweet cats pictured above need a new foster or adoptive home through absolutely no fault of their own!

-Princess: 1 year old tabby female, spayed and vaccinated, super sweet and friendly. Originally rescued by PFA and then adopted, her family is moving out of province and can't take her. They adore her and are very sad to give her up, as she is extremely well behaved and loving.

-Oscar and Arthur: rescued by PFA separately, these sweet boys were adopted by the same family and quickly bonded. They are best buddies now. Sadly, they are coming back to the organization due to a move, and we would love to see them kept together. They are both neutered and vaccinated, and clearly good with other cats!

-Gina: Black and white spayed and vaccinated female. Gina is a sweet but skittish PFA street rescue who was likely abused in the past. She is submissive, and is attacked daily by the other cats in her foster home. Gina would be far better in a new foster home as an only cat or with another laid-back cat. The current situation is very stressful for the cats and the foster mom, but especially Gina, who has already been through so much.

The First Rescues of 2012

Thanks to the amazingly warm winter to date, we haven't been quite as busy with winter rescues as we usually are this time of year when any animal outside is at risk of harm from severe weather.

However, we are never idle for long and a couple of our feral team volunteers have been busy over the last week nabbing some feral kittens that are just little enough to rescue and socialize for adoption.

Honey (tortoiseshell) and Hettie (grey tabby) were rescued from an infamous PFA feeding station, along with their tortie sister, Hera (not pictured).

They are shy but making good progress in foster care and they will be listed for adoption in the near future.

Great Offer for Foster Homes With Dogs

They say that one good turn begets another, and PFA foster homes with dogs are being offered a terrific opportunity to access training sessions at a reduced cost by our pet-loving friends at Oberhund!

Details are as follows:

"Help! My Dog is Out of Control!" : This is a six-week course available to PFA foster families the class for $60 + tax (regular $90 + tax).
Location: Everydog Daycare and Education Centre
Purpose - this course is for people with dogs who are out of control, for people wanting to learn how to manage some problem behaviours, and for people new to dog training.
Days/times are currently either Wednesday evenings from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm or Saturday mornings from 10:30 am to 11:30 am.
Classes start next week (from Jan 11/Jan 14) and continue for six weeks (Feb. 15 and Feb.18th).

There is some flexibility to adjust days/times to suit the majority of the participants, and if these classes fill up another set will be offered.

An Update on Teeny!

Our beloved teeny-tiny kitten, Teeny, was rescued from a junk filled garage at the 11th hour as it was about to be bulldozed. Fortunately someone heard his cries and he was rescued!

Teeny is a terrific little guy with lots of spunk and attitude that belie his small size. He did great in foster care and was quick to win the hearts of a nice young couple looking for a fun cat to join their family.

His new adoptive family is really enjoying him, marveling at how much he eats and laughing at him perched in their Christmas tree!

We are very happy our sweet little guy is so well-loved.

Two Terrific New Rescues - A Tabby and A Tuxedo!

When it comes to adorable and adoptable cats, we have them in spades, including two brand new rescues, Chester and Clara!

Little Chester was found last month in the east end, hungry, alone - and desperate for some shelter and human kindness. This adorable guy has now been fixed and will be up for adoption shortly. He is snuggly and spunky.

Clara, the adorable little tuxedo kitten, was rescued from the cold by a kind lady who came across her while shoveling snow the other day. Fortunately, the lady lives next to a PFA kitten foster home so Clara was quickly whisked to safety. She is very sweet and cuddly, but sadly has not been claimed.

Another Happy Update

These two boys, Henry and James, are the best of friends and do everything together.

Henry came to PFA as a stray last Christmas. We put out a desperate call for a foster home on Christmas night, and were very fortunate to have a kind animal loving family come to the rescue. They loved Henry so much they decided to keep him!

James was a scrawny, flea-ridden kitty when his rescuers delivered him to a vet clinic last winter after finding him abandoned in a rural area. He was super-sweet though, and had lots of potential. He was lucky enough to be fostered by the same family, and quickly bonded with Henry.

James also became a permanent family member, and you can tell from this pic that they are pretty happy about it!

A Happy Update

A few weeks ago I wrote about two cats that were left homeless and facing an uncertain future due to tragic circumstances within their respective families.

One was Steller, a handsome tabby who was rescued as a stray and only had a month to enjoy his new family before they had to give him up due to serious medical emergencies.

The other was Zoe, a 5-year old declawed female whose owner died suddenly, leaving her in urgent need of a new home.

We are pleased to report that both cats were very fortunate to find new homes quickly. Zoe was adopted by a lady referred to us by one of our hardworking volunteers who had recently lost her own cat due to illness, and was missing having a feline friend.

Steller went to the PetSmart Adoption Centre and quickly won over a new family who took him home as a friend to their other rescued cat, Jayco! Steller (now Stan) and Jayco became instant friends and are inseparable.

These cats are lucky to have found new families so quickly! Not every cat is this lucky. We have lots of winderful cats that have been in foster care for a year or more, and are still looking for forever homes. Sweet Success Story

Holiday Safety Tips for Cats

The holiday season brings all sorts of wonderful things that people enjoy, like Christmas trees, plants and chocolate, but some of these things can be hazards for our pets.

Care2.com offers the following tips for keeping your cat healthy this Christmas:
Remember that ribbons and tinsel are tempting toys for a curious feline. But if your cat swallows these objects, they can cause serious problems if they get “stuck” in the intestinal tract or wrapped around your cat’s tongue. Keep these types of decorations out of the reach of your cat.

If you put up a Christmas tree for the holidays, your cat may be tempted to taste the water at its base. Unfortunately, that same water may be stagnant or filled with fertilizers, preservatives, or other chemicals which are unsafe for your cat.
Many of the holiday plants that are popular this time of year are dangerous for our cats. Though poinsettias are generally over-rated in terms of their potential for toxicity, they can still cause mild intestinal upset for your cat. More importantly, holly can be very toxic, as can some types of mistletoe. In addition, lilies can be deadly for your cat and are often found in holiday flower arrangements. Do not leave these plants where your cat can chew on them.
Be careful about sharing your favorite holiday treats with your cat. Chocolate and many other types of foods can be dangerous.
Scented candles and potpourri are popular holiday decorations as well. Though they make our homes smell wonderful, they may be dangerous for curious cats. Even worse, an open flame can easily become a fire hazard if knocked over by your cat.
Many of the decorations we enjoy during the holidays are electric, and the cords can become a target for a playful cat. Biting into an electrical cord can pose an electrocution threat for your cat. Be cautious of dangling cords and place them where your cat cannot access them.
Be sure to spend a little extra time with your feline friend during the holidays. A little extra attention from you may help ease some of the tension of the holidays for your cat.
Make certain your cat has a place to retreat when company arrives if he feels the need. Your cat’s safe place should have a litter box, a food and water station, and a soft comfortable place to rest. It should be a private area where guests are not allowed.

Paying attention to small details can make a big difference in keeping your cat safe and healthy during the holidays, and will help both you and your cat weather the holiday season and start the new year on a happy note.

Santa Needed!

Stray Central!

Ah, the country life - quiet, no traffic, tranquility...lots of good reasons that people like to live outside the city on acreages, farms, in bedroom communities, etc.

One downside is that there is a huge volume of animals dumped on rural or farm properties by people who no longer want their pets, and figure that a farm will accept them with open arms!

There are many kind farm and rural families who do their best to help the many animals dumped on their properties, but everyone has limits as to the amount of animals they can absorb.

These sweet cats - Hobo (orange), Minkota (tabby) Puffins (grey/white) and Too Cute (fluffy tabby - is this an appropriate name or what! are all cat refugees who landed at a farm outside Regina. They are sweet cats who have had a rough start but were lucky enough to land with a kind farm family who care enough to get them sterilized and to try and find them good homes.

These cats are in need of foster or adoptive homes where they can be safe, warm and loved. For now, they are in an insulated barn and are sheltered, fed, and given daily attention. But they would still love a caring home of their own and lap to snooze in!

Kitty Totem

A Kitty Mini-Me!

Our sweet foster cat, Tigger, and his little buddy Zeus have a lot more in common than being orange and white, and super cute.

Tigger (4 months) and his sibling were found abandoned at a riding stable outside the city by a young woman and her friend who took them home for fostering. His sibling was quickly adopted, leaving him behind and lonely so he went to a foster home with other kittens for him to play with. Tig loves to play!

Zeus (3 months) and his sister Zola ( formerly Squirt and Pumpkin) were found orphaned on a farm and were bottle-fed by their rescuer, so they are used to cuddling! Zola recently found a forever home, and Zeus cried continuously without his sister, leading his foster mom to ask if he could be fostered with another kitten.

Tigger and Zeus turned out to be a great pair and they became instant friends, playing, wrestling and snuggling together constantly. Zeus is like a little miniature version of his foster brother.

They are so cute together!

A Generous Gift From the Phoenix Group

PFA was the fortunate recipient of some holiday cheer today from The Phoenix Group, a Regina based ad agency that supports local non-profits through their annual 12 Days of Giving campaign.

PFA was one of the lucky 12 agencies chosen to receive much needed donations and today several Phoenix Group volunteers dropped off a financial donation, food, litter, heated wated bowls, a pet bed, and other supplies to help us support the many cats in our care, both foster cats and our outdoor feral cats.

They also got the chance to visit with one of our dedicated volunteers and foster moms, Dona, and her foster cats Sabrina and Othello, who are also very excited about the gifts!

We are very grateful for the kindness and generosity shown by The Phoenix Group, and we know the cats will appreciate it too!

Instead of fighting your way through throngs of people at the mall, how about giving a different kind of gift this year? Here are some gift ideas that will show your friends and family that you care about them and the homeless animals on our streets:

Visit one of our satellite adoption facilities (Petcetera and PetSmart) and cuddle some of our foster cats. Even if you don't have room in your home for another pet right now, these guys love to get some extra affection and attention. Nothing like spreading a little holiday cheer!

Help Needed for Two Cats in Limbo

PFA has received urgent requests for help with two cats that are in limbo and facing surrender to the RHS due to family tragedies that have left them without care providers.

One is Zoe, pictured, a spayed and de-clawed female cat who is 5 years old and very loving. Her elderly owner recently passed away, leaving Zoe without a home. She is in a short-term arrangement with a relative who is not able to keep her, so we are seeking a foster or adoptive home for Zoe as soon as possible.

The other cat needing help is a beautiful green-eyed tabby boy who is a year old, and neutered. He was recently rescued by a kind couple when he wandered onto an acreage. Sadly, after only a month with his new family, they experienced a severe medical crisis and there is no-one to look after him. His situation is urgent, as there is no-one available to care for him.

It's Never Too Late for Kittens

Yep, we've got more tiny kittens! These little guys are now about 6 weeks old and will be ready for adoption soon.

There mama was a stray at a feeding station who was rescued by a kind couple who realized she was pregnant and didn't want to leave her out in the cold. They took her in but couldn't foster her so asked for assistance to find her a nice quiet foster home where she could tend to her babies safely.

We were fortunate to have someone step up and offer to foster this sweet little family, and they are all doing fantastic: Mama Mirra, Pan, Bear, Billie and Syd. They are friendly, playful and cuddly and will make fantastic pets!

Like Mama, Like Kitten...

This cute little look-a-like tabby family is enjoying a meal together after going hungry as strays in a rural area for some time.

The mama cat, Jilly, is a shy but sweet girl who has had several litters near the home of the family that rescued her and her kittens when it got cold. They are worried that Jilly is pregnant again, so they contacted PFA for help to get her spayed and find her a home.

Jilly's beautiful kittens are spoken for, but this sweet and devoted mama cat needs a home of her own. She is quite calm and affectionate, and is no doubt happy to no longer be struggling to raise kittens outdoors.

Foster Homes Needed!

Both Pearl (top photo, white cat) and Stanley (next photo, black and white cat) were rescued by PFA volunteers during the first cold snap of this year when both were found crying in distress at two separate PFA inner city feeding stations. With temperatures as low as -25, our volunteers knew that all 9 of their feline lives could be on the line, so they brought both refugees from the street in, even with our current foster homes at capacity. When the cold is so severe, our volunteers have a really hard time leaving tame cats behind on the street, especially ones clearly in distress.
Since PFA is completely full, both of these lovely cats are currently being boarded at the vet clinic. However, this is far from an ideal situation, as not only does it use up some of PFA's precious financial resources that could go towards spaying and neutering, but it doesn't allow Pearl and Stanley to relax and enjoy the comforts of a home setting. We could really use some new foster homes for cases such as this!

Not only do we need more regular foster homes, but we could use some short-term and emergency foster homes throughout the upcoming holiday season when some regular foster homes are away, and the vet clinic is full with holiday boarders.

Update - Blackie

Here are some new pics of our handsome Blackie, a long-time stray who was recently rescued from the cold.

Like so many of the cats we rescue, Blackie turned out to be a very sweet and affectionate cat who has shown no interest in returning to the great outdoors. He would much rather cuddle in a lap or enjoy being petted - and of course, he appreciates a good meal.

Blackie is a fantastic cat who would make a wonderful pet for any cat lover. He has good looks and quiet charm, and is very well behaved.

Blackie is currently at PetCetera awaiting his forever home. He would love for you to visit and show him some love!

Success Story - Bear (Now Roman)

Last summer we rescued a litter of seven kittens and their mama, Jasmine, who were living at the Sedley Seed Plant.

A plant is no place for tiny kittens, so as soon as they could, the staff brought them to a PFA foster home.

It took a while, but all seven babies found great homes.

Here is a pic of our little Bear, the last one to be adopted, hanging out in his adoptive home looking content!

A New Way to Help!

PFA often gets calls from people who want to help and who offer to do almost anything but take a cat off our hands! We are fortunate to have support from many animal lovers who aren't able to take on more cats but who want to help nevertheless.

So, we have a new way for people to help! You can now sponsor an adoptable cat on our website.

This is a pilot project currently focused on kittens that need to be spayed or neutered. We hope to expand it to all cats soon! Please visit the kitten section of the cat-a-logue to sponsor the spay/neuter of a deserving kitten. Donations can be received securely and confidentially through our website, or by contacting us a pfasask@gmail.com.

A Tale of Two Torties

These two beautiful tortoiseshell kitties both landed on our doorstep recently after being found in rural areas, pregnant, hungry and with no shelter.

Miss Kitty (top 2 - frostbitten ear) was likely abandoned on a farm near Regina when the owners left, leaving her to fend for herself with no heated shelter.

Sookie turned up on an acreage a few weeks ago looking for food and refuge from the cold. Luckily, the kind couple who owned the property constructed a makeshift shelter for her to keep her safe from the elements and contacted us for help.

We are currently very overloaded with rescues and don't have foster homes available, but we know that kittens would not survive out in the cold so we had to help.

Both girls are super sweet and friendly, love attention and have loads of personality. They also love being safe and warm, and are happy for any bit of affection they get.

They are currently at the vet clinic and will be spayed and vaccinated right away. We would love to find foster home for both of them (we are currently full).

Update on Suki

Last spring, I wrote about the sad tale of Suki, a beautiful black female cat first rescued by PFA as a tiny kitten in the spring of 2009.

She was quickly adopted, but sadly landed out at the RHS after being neglected and unwanted for some time.

However, she bounced back quickly once she was in the safety and security of a loving foster home, and is doing great! She is happy and healthy, and looking for a home of her own - a true forever home this time.

Special Opportunity for Rescued Kittens

We normally only send sterilized adult cats to satellite adoption centres, based on our own preferences and store practice.

However, with all the great kittens we have currently looking for homes and foster care space limited, we decided to ask PetSmart for an opportunity to showcase some of our wonderful rescued kittens.

New Kitten Rescues

PFA has some more fantastic young kittens ready for forever homes.

Zeus and Zola (orange and white) were rescued on the Thanksgiving long week-end after being found abandoned by their mama at farm. They are now 7 weeks old and Zola has already been adopted! But her brother Zeus still needs a home and will be listed shortly. He is the kitten on the right.

Mittens and Gloves are 4 month old male kittens who are polydactyl (6-toed) and tons of fun. They have been in foster care 2 days and have already made friends with the black lab in the home!

Echo is an adorable little doll of a cat who was found all by her lonesome out in the Creeks, just crying to be rescued. She is a very calm and well-behaved kitten.

Still More Cats in Need

It's getting cold, and there is snow in the forecast. Even though we are always pleading for foster homes and showcasing needy cats, it is no joke. The need is very real and more urgent all the time as the temperatures plummet.

These are just a few of the tame and friendly cats on the wait-list for foster care - we've provided outdoor shelters in the meantime. Right now, we have a number of people caring for outdoor cats and providing food and shelter for strays. Many of these cats belonged to someone once, and have been abandoned or somehow they have ended up stray and un-claimed.

BLACKIE - (black) a handsome black male living on the deck of a kind lady who has worked with Blackie for a year to ensure he is socialized and ready for a forever family. Balckie comes neutered, vaccinated and treated for ear mites, and is a delightful boy who is a bit shy, and relies on a bit of time to adjust. He could be an indoor/outdoor cat.

JULIE D - gorgeous rag doll cross who somehow ended up abandoned in the city's north end. She has a temporary food and shelter source, but could use a stable and long term placement (she is very sweet and friendly). She is very lucky to have a kind food and shelter source. We'd love to get her a home soon.

Adult Cats Need Love Too!

Kittens tend to be popular and it is much easier to find both foster and adoptive homes for them. After all, who can resist adorable and playful little balls of fur?

But, they can be a lot of work and get into lots of mischief! They are highly entertaining, but if you are into a laid back cat that is more interested in snoozing in your lap than up-ending your plants or climbing your curtains, consider an adult cat.

The Regina Humane Society offer the Top Ten Reasons to Adopt an Adult Cat:
1. What you see is what you get. When you adopt an adult cat, you know what you are getting. Sure, kittens are cute, but you never know what the future holds. An adorable kitten could grow up to be a really ugly puss. This is a big risk. Go for the sure thing. Take a sweet-faced older Tabby.

2. High mileage cats still run great. Used cats aren’t like used cars. They aren’t at a shelter because they are defective or worn out. They may have simply outlived their former owners or been unable to join them at a hospital, nursing home, or new apartment. Some cats get lost and end up at a shelter. And many are brought to a shelter after a family member develops allergies, or an aversion to the family cat.

3. Adult cats aren’t as “chewsy”. Kittens are like human children: everything goes in their mouths. Whether teething or just exploring bits of the world around them, kittens can be very destructive little bundles of fur. Kittens chew on shoes, the corners of books, ear lobes, carpet tassels, electrical cords, drapery strings, plants, and much, much more. Adult cats typically chew less, if at all. They tend to save their energy for more important activities, like tormenting the neighbour’s Terrier.

4. Kittens stumble in blindly, where adult cats fear to tread. Two well-known clichés about cats are: “curiosity killed the cat” and “cats have nine lives.” And curiosity usually leads to the loss of about eight of a kitten’s lives in its first year. Kittens tend to get into much more trouble resulting in accidents and injuries (see, for example, the reference to “chewing electrical cords” above). Kittens eat things they shouldn’t, fall from high places, unsuccessfully attempt to make friends with the neighbor’s tormented Terrier, and generally worry you half to death.

5. Kittens are lacking when it comes to licking. Few kittens have mastered the fine art of self-grooming. While adult cats may spend up to half their waking hours licking fur, kittens are just too busy enjoying life to clean themselves properly. When you consider that kittens are really just dust-mops with legs, and that they generally display marginal litter box etiquette, you might want to master the somewhat dangerous art of cat-bathing.

6. Einstein knew the truth about cats. The genius scientist Albert Einstein discovered an important relationship between mass and energy. He described it using the mathematical equation E=(MC) 2. This equation means that your Energy level (E) is proportional to the Mass (M) of your Cat ©, twice over. The equation basically shows that if you adopt a cat with more Mass, like an adult cat, your Energy level will be much higher than if you adopt a cat with a low Mass, such as a kitten. This is true because adult cats sleep more, play less, require less supervision, break fewer lamps, and don’t try to bite your toes through the blankets in the middle of the night. With an adult cat, you will sleep better, relax more, make fewer claims on your homeowner’s policy, and enjoy more Energy. There you have it. Are you going to argue with Albert Einstein?

7. Kittens and children sometimes don’t mix. Children can be rough on both cats and kittens, even when they mean no real harm. It can’t be helped. It’s just how kids are. When you tell a child that “cats always land on their feet,” the first thing the child will do is drop one from your rooftop to see if it’s true. Adult cats are better equipped to deal with pesky kids. They can generally escape from them, hide, and then contemplate revenge by moonlight.

8. You don’t need to teach an old cat new tricks. Actually, you don’t need to teach a kitten tricks either, because the truth is that neither cats nor kittens allow you to teach them anything anyway. But new parents usually feel the need to try. Inevitably, they end up feeling guilt or failure when the kitten disregards them, jumps on the counters, unrolls the toilet paper, and engages in other acts of feline mayhem. If you adopt an older cat, you avoid all this emotional turmoil. Since you didn’t raise the cat, you don’t have to take responsibility for the cat’s shortcomings. Instead, you can blame the former owner and play the role of victim and saint for tolerating it all.

9. Adult cats don’t “litter” as much. Kittens play, sunbathe, build sandcastles, and even sleep in their litter boxes. And then there’s a game called “poo-hockey,” where a piece of dried waste is removed from the box and batted around the floor until it disappears under a major appliance or piece of furniture. People who adopt older cats happily miss this stage of feline development. Adult cats understand the purpose of a litter box and will usually cooperate with your efforts to keep theirs tidy. But the most important reason to adopt an older cat is:

10. It might be their last chance. Many adult cats end up in shelters due to no fault of their own. Separated from their loved ones, surrounded by other strange cats, confined, confused, and sometimes frightened, many are emotionally devastated by their misfortune. Sadly for adult cats, most people who adopt gravitate toward the adorable, bouncy, big-eyed kittens. Older cats sit by and watch, as one loving family after another passes them over for a cute kitten from this season’s litter.

Kittens will always be popular, and most have no trouble attracting admirers. But for the abandoned, forgotten, and heartbroken adult cats, you just might be their last chance to have the love and warmth of a home where they can live out their years in comfort. Please consider adopting an older cat. When cared for properly, cats can live well into their late teens, and sometimes into their early twenties. Typically, they will remain active and playful throughout most of their lives. Some may need a little extra patience while adjusting to a new home, but once they feel safe and secure again, most will give you years of faithful companionship and unconditional love.

Foster Homes Urgently Needed

As the temperature drops, the calls for help with stray and homeless cats increase as people don't want to see cats and kittens left out in the cold.

PFA has received numerous requests for help with strays over the last few weeks, and unfortunately we are maxed out to the point where we can not take in new rescues.

Currently, we have a number of cats / kittens waiting for foster care:

a siamese cross female found stray in the General Hospital area
one 8 week old black kitten and one 12 week old tabby kitten found stray in the north end
a litter of manx kittens in an unheated barn outside the city (about 5-6 weeks old now)
a grey tabby adult female that has been homeless for several months
a white female who is stray in the north end, and has not been claimed
an adult calico with frozen ears currently scavenging at a golf course

These are just some of the cats on our radar screen that need help.

Moo on the Move

This pretty and unique looking cat is Moo, a rescue from 2 years ago who is one of those cats that is shy enough that she is hard to adopt out, but tame enough that she doesn't necessarily belong at a colony either.

Moo was a resident of a feral colony who ingratiated herself with an elderly man in the neighbourhood and moved in with him last winter. Sadly, he passed away recently and his family has left her back out on the street.

We would like to find Moo a patient foster or adoptive family that will let her enjoy some supervised outside time, and who will give her time to warm up to them and become as cuddly as she was with her last adopter.

Moo is about 3 years old now, spayed, and has had all of her shots but will need boosters. She is excellent with other cats.

More New Kittens

PFA has two gorgeous new rescued kittens who both experienced some pretty hard times prior to being rescued by kind, cat-loving citizens.

Blitz, the brown tabby, is a 5-month old kitten who was thrown from a moving vehicle and then rescued by a young girl who witnessed him being tossed from the car on her way home from school - she picked him up and took him home with her. Luckily, he wasn't hurt and he is doing great in his multi-pet foster home.

Brooke, the lovely grey tabby/dilute tortie, was found stray and lonely in a bedroom community, where it is all too common for unwanted animals to be dumped. She is very sweet and affectionate - she is about 3.5 months.

Happy Update on Duchess!

In the summer of 2010, PFA rescued a sweet mama cat and her 6 babies, who were quickly dubbed the Aristocats by their foster family.

Duchess was an excellent mama, and once her babies were all adopted, it was her turn to find a forever home.

Luckily, she won the hearts of a kind, cat-loving young couple who sent this update, just in time for Halloween:

We adopted Quinnie (formerly Duchess) last November and fell in love with her. She was originally not much of a lap cat, but she definitely is now, and getting to be more and more every day. Everyone who comes to our house comments on how nice she is and what nice fur she has- sleek, shiny and soft like a rabbit. Many people thought I was crazy for wanting a black cat, but after they meet her they change their mind. She is playful, cuddly and loving-just what we were looking for!

We are so happy that this devoted little mama found a family that is just as devoted to her.

This is the last week-end of our bottle drive, so if you have any cans and bottles for us, they can be dropped off this week-end on Saturday the 29th or Sunday the 30th at 1723 Quebec Street (please use the back yard) over the weekend between 10am and 6pm.

It would be greatly appreciated if the donations were organized per Sarcan requirements, with cans in one bag, bottles with lids off (preferable in boxes not bags) and please do not submit items that are not refundable.

Baby Bianco

Last night, one of our feral team volunteers found this little white fluff ball at a feeding station and didn't want to leave him out in the cold.

2 Awesome New Rescues!

Last week, feral team volunteers picked up two beautiful tame male cats at a busy feral feeding station in the city's core area.

Bones (black and white) and Seamus (white) have been hanging around at the station for a while, likely abandoned by their owners. They are sweet and friendly boys who were quick to befriend our feeding volunteers, letting them know they needed to be rescued!

Both cat have know been neutered, vaccinated and are ready for forever homes.

Bones is a super friendly affectionate guy who is courting new families at the PetCetera adoption center. He is adorable and loves to cuddle.

Seamus was fortunate to land a spot in an awesome foster home where he is doing great with the resident dogs and cats, and has impressed his foster dad with his easy-going ways. He has beautiful green eyes.

Teeny-Tiny Kitten Rescued From Peril

Yesterday afternoon I got a call from the PFA Feral Team leader. She had a little 3-week old kitten who was plucked from a junk filled garage near a feeding station.

The property owners were clearing out the garage with a bobcat, but luckily heard the kitten crying and he was rescued safely, albeit smelling of diesel fuel! He was whisked to a kitten foster home, where he has settled in nicely already. He is an adorable and spunky little guy who immediately chased the other kittens in the home.

Raccoon Alert

PFA has received a couple of notifications recently regarding raccoon activity in residential areas of the city.

Pet owners should note that raccoons carry a type of roundworm that can be fatal to pets (and dangerous to humans as well!) If you see signs of scat from a wild animal. you are encouraged to dispose of it quickly, and carefully.

And, please keep your pets away from any areas that contain signs of wild animal scat.

If you see signs of raccoon scat or activity in your area, please contact the City of Regina for assistance.

During the fall months, many organizations launch fundraising campaigns in support of the United Way, which raises for money for a number of local charities.

A Thanksgiving Treat

One PFA foster mom got more than turkey and pie when she went home to her parent's farm for Thanksgiving - she also found 2 abandoned baby kittens.

She spent the week-end feeding them with a syringe once it was clear no mama cat was around, and brought them home with her to foster.

Squirt and Pumpkin are approximately 3 weeks old, and they will be available for adoption the week of November 14th.

Kitten Foster Home Needed ASAP

One of our dedicated kitten foster moms has to leave the province unexpectedly due to a serious family emergency, and we need to place 3 kittens in an alternate foster home by the end of the week.

There are two 4-month old kittens and one 5-month old kitten that need a temporary placement for a few weeks. They are all good with children and other cats.

A Beautiful Big Brother!

We get lots of requests from families wanting kittens or cats that are good with dogs, and we are fortunate to have a several dedicated foster families with friendly canines that love cats.

One of our favourite big brothers is Sebastian, a lovely black lab who has helped out with a couple of dozen kittens over the last few years!

Check out Sebastien with some of his cute foster buddies from this past summer / early fall - Lewis, the box baby, Morgan and Starsky. Arthur still has several kitten buddies looking for homes, including Arthur, Starsky and Hutch.

Good Night to Ellie Mae and Sky

PFA volunteers are saddened by the loss of two special cats in the past week:

Ellie-Mae, was a long-time resident of a PFA feral colony. She was a lovely black-and white cat who was spayed through our TNR program and was a healthy and well cared for (and loved) cat who greeted the feeders upon their arrival. Sadly, no matter how well maintained our feral colonies are, the cats are subject to many dangers associated with life outdoors, and Ellie-Mae was killed by a vehicle. Our feral feeders will miss seeing her sweet face at the feeding station.

Sky (pictured) was a young mama cat who was rescued by a kind young lady who was surprised to find herself the caregiver of not just a little female cat, but all of a sudden a litter of kittens too. The kittens all found homes and we were hoping to find a loving home for Sky as well. She was placed in an experienced and loving foster home and listed for adoption. Unfortunately, when she went to be spayed, the vet discovered a number of mammary tumours - she had feline breast cancer, and her prognosis was very poor. Thus she was put down to spare her suffering.

She was loved, and will be missed by her foster family. We thank them for the kind treatment and love they showed Sky during her short time with them.

A Halloween Fundraiser!

Please join us for the Magic Cauldron Psychic and Holistic Day on Saturday, October 29th, to celebrate Halloween - and rescued cats!

PFA will have a booth at the event, and will also be the recipient of the door proceeds!

There will be many vendors there with healthy products, and a number of featured speakers.

We also need several volunteers for this event to help at the door, and at the PFA booth. Please contact us at pfasask@gmail.com if you are interested in helping.
